IFTTT stands for “If This, Then That.” It’s a communication protocol that allows different devices to talk to each other. The latest update to the GetSafe app added IFTTT and made the app even more useful. Wondering “what is IFTTT exactly and how do I use it?” Keep reading!

How Does IFTTT Work?

Think about how Bluetooth allows you to “pair” unrelated devices. Your phone can communicate with external devices: laptop, external speaker, scale, blood pressure monitor, and more. While Bluetooth requires devices to be physically close, IFTTT is Web-based. You can trigger actions from miles away instead of a few feet away.

The command language is extremely simple: “If this happens, then do that.” These are called “recipes,” and GetSafe has a number of pre-mixed recipes that help you connect with your home devices.  Examples include:

  • Turn on the smart bulbs when I disarm my security system.
  • If someone opens the safe, start your 1080p night vision security camera recording.
  • Adjust the smart thermostat if the temperature gets too low or too high.
  • When I arm/disarm my security system, log those actions in a Google Drive spreadsheet.

You can also use IFTTT services to perform Web-based actions. Post the same content to multiple social media services at the same time, have the day’s weather delivered to your smartphone every morning, or remotely turn up the ringer on your phone when you can’t find it.

How to Use IFTTT with GetSafe

GetSafe has created some applets you can use, but it’s easy to make your own rules. This step-by-step guide shows you how. Our short video guide explains how GetSafe works with Amazon’s Alexa:
